Power factor tells us how efficiently the power is being consumed on your plant/site. A bad power factor can result in huge power bills. In technical language, it is a ratio between the real power (kW) and the apparent power (kVA). The real power (kW) is the power that performs the actual work. The reactive power (kVar) is the power that helps to establish an electromagnetic field to make some equipment run. The apparent power (kVA) is the total of reactive (kVar) and real power (kW). If your plant/site has a bad power factor the energy provided charges you for correcting the power factor and those charges are known as Network Demand Charges. Plan 4 Demand Services can perform the power factor calculations to improve the existing power factor in your plant/site. By maintaining a power factor close to unity you may avoid costly energy bills because of a “low” power-factor clause or high kVA demand.
